My Nutrition Philosophy

In 2010, after 3 years of training, I graduated with a professional diploma in Nutritional therapy which is the comprehensive study of Nutritional Science and Therapeutics.

In a nutshell, nutritional therapy takes the latest evidence based nutrition and applies it to improve the health of individuals based on their own specific health needs and goals.

It encompasses the use of carefully chosen diet & lifestyle recommendations to help improve a wide variety of health concerns including weight management, low energy, digestive problems, high cholesterol, headaches, acne etc.

It works on the basis that we are each individual in our make-up and therefore, ‘one size fits all’ models of eating (often based on outdated research) simply don’t work well for a lot of people.

Since earning my nutrition qualification, I’ve been working passionately to share my nutritional knowledge and help as many people as I can to look and feel their very best. I do this through my 1:1 consultancy work, nutrition seminars and also through my work in the media as a health writer and broadcaster.

I am a member of NTOI – The professional organisation representing qualified Nutritional Therapists in Ireland. I also completed a Diploma in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) in 2012 to enhance my skills as a nutritionist and help clients change their mindset around food. Where applicable, I use simple CBT strategies to help clients overcome emotional eating and negative thought patterns which can sabotage weight loss efforts.

My own personal approach to diet and nutrition is very balanced and flexible. I don’t subscribe to or preach about any one style of eating because I truly believe there is no ‘wrong’ or ‘right’ diet, it’s about figuring out what’s right for you. In other words, what helps YOU look and feel your best and fits in with your lifestyle. This may take some experimentation and guidance.

I never advocate following fad diets or suggest reducing/eliminating foods without offering viable alternatives that will maintain nutritional needs. I only ever encourage eating patterns that are nutritionally balanced and sustainable for the long term. My job is to help educate and empower individuals to make healthy choices for themselves. I do this by providing expert nutrition advice, practical meal suggestions, simple & tasty recipes along with tips on how to plan/organise and stay motivated for the long term.

I’m a big believer that ‘Good Food is Good Medicine’, but, by the same token, I don’t believe that diet is the ‘be all and end all’ either – good sleep, effective stress management, exercise and a positive mental attitude are just as important to our overall health & wellbeing. As such, I am always wary of exaggerated nutritional claims and take a ‘whole body approach’ to health and wellness.

My nutrition advice is not intended to replace conventional medicines but to complement them, and, where necessary, dietary changes can be made under the supervision of a Medical Doctor. We all know that prevention is better than cure, but many of us just don’t realise that our first line of defence against disease, starts with our dinner plate.
